Though my first passion will always be all things sound, I've also enjoyed putting the digital pen to page over the years. From local business radio spots, to editing newsletter content in the medical field, to freelance blogging, researching unfamiliar topics, locations and brands to develop interesting copy is a stimulating challenge. Below is a little sampling of the different types of creative work I have written and edited.

The Urban School District remains number one in the state, and incredible strides have been made toward establishing a green community, with massive investments in solar power across all major buildings. Don’t let them hog the sun though. Up and Running

Nate Jowett, MD, works as a surgeon and investigator in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, while also serving as Director of the Surgical Photonics & Engineering Laboratory at Mass. Eye and Ear. Outside of the office, he is an Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology at Harvard Medical School. Nate could also teach a class about running marathons, as he has become quite the veteran. This will be his 7th marathon and his 5th time running the Boston Marathon® with Team Eye and Ear.

Q: What made you decide to return to Team Eye and Ear for another marathon?

A: It’s a privilege to help support cutting edge research at Mass. Eye and Ear, and running the Boston Marathon® has become an annual personal goal over the past five years. There is a wonderful camaraderie that develops between runners preparing for race day, and running for Team Eye and Ear provides the opportunity to run alongside passionate and inspiring individuals, including world-class athlete and Mass. Eye and Ear Trustee Sally Reiley!

Q: How has the training been going? Any challenges or highlights?

A: So far, so good! Marathon training while raising two toddlers is definitely a challenge, though hopefully the weekends spent pushing their double running stroller around will help my performance come Marathon Monday.

Q: How has your prior marathon experience aided you this time?

A: The marathon becomes less daunting with experience and it’s become easier to incorporate the training into my life. Beyond cardiovascular benefits, there’s evidence to suggest distance running improves memory and neural plasticity, so I’ve come to consider it important to my work. My early morning weekday runs allow me to disconnect, think through research challenges and generate new ideas.

Q: Which areas of the hospital do you envision your funds benefiting and why?

A: Diseases impacting motor and sensory nerves of the head and neck (the cranial nerves) are treated by nearly all Mass. Eye and Ear clinicians. Whether present at birth, occurring secondary to resection of a tumor, or the result of trauma or infection, cranial nerve deficits yield devastating consequences for patients. In my clinical practice, I treat patients with facial palsy and loss of facial and corneal sensation, which may result in blindness. Fundraising from my run will support research into cranial nerve regeneration and rehabilitation within the Surgical Photonics & Engineering Lab at Mass. Eye and Ear, with the goal of  advancing care for patients with these difficult-to-treat conditions.

Q: What excites you the most about Marathon Monday?

A: It’s a tremendous honor to participate in one of the premiere sporting events on the planet. The 26.2 miles of cheering crowds provide constant motivation and entertainment, and the final 600m down Boylston Street is sheer joy.

Jon Burns joined Mass. Eye and Ear in January 2001 and currently serves as the Supply Chain Business Manager. Often seen around the surgical areas assessing supply needs, Jon collaborates well with staff throughout the organization.

A natural leader, Jon has made what could've been a rough industry supply recall survivable. While our routine ordering process has been disrupted, Jon has kept us all abreast of progress and the process for the procurement of patient care supplies, focusing on a multidisciplinary approach in order to continue to meet the needs for our patients.

Jon is highly respected by colleagues and provides his internal customers with unparalleled service. "No job is too large or too small for Jon," remarked Alan McGoldrick, BSN, RN, Nurse Director of the Longwood Surgical Center. "On the day the recall was announced, he stepped out of his managerial role and rolled up his sleeves as we inventoried each and every item available to ensure there was no service disruption to our patients. He has that special ability to access a situation and jump right in to help. These are the qualities that make Jon an outstanding employee as well as an outstanding leader in his field."

Director of Materials Management, Phil Jordan, elaborated on Jon's leadership qualities. "Jon's experience at MEE and his understanding of the supply chain has made him an invaluable asset for us. He is friendly and understands that 'support services' means helping those who care for patients. He is always responsive and takes the time to teach, not just solve."

Thank you, Jon, for keeping your coworkers prepared to aid our patients!

Despite an average population of less than 150,000, Syracuse packs tons of lively activities for a city in upstate New York. Probably being most well known as a college town for the historic Syracuse University, it is unquestionably a community for the whole family. With multiple lake views, sprawling countryside and loads of urban culture, there’s always adventures to be had, especially this time of year. Fun in the sun is abundant when you go boating, kayaking or tubing on Skaneateles Lake. The outdoor Adventure Center at Greek Peak Mountain is appropriately named with breathtaking views to be had as ride up the mountain coaster and zoom down the ziplines. Scratch one more thing off of your bucket list at Skydive Central New York. Finish out your day exploring the shopping and entertainment at Armory Square, or relaxing with a cold handcrafted beer at Empire Farm Brewing Company. It’s a fun city for any time of year and Ford’s new EcoSport is the fun, any time vehicle to help you see it all.

EcoSport Performance

Ford’s urban crossover sub-compact SUV provides four trim options to choose from, the standard S, SE, Titanium and SES. The first three options are front wheel drive with a 1 liter inline 3 cylinder Ecobooster Turbocharged engine providing 123 horsepower and 125 pound-feet of torque for about 27 to 29 MPG for city and highway respectively. All three can be upgraded to a 2L I-4 cylinder engine for 166hp and 149lb-ft of torque for an MPG of 23 city and 29 highway, which comes standard on the four wheel drive SES trim. All trims have a 6-speed automatic transmission. The upgraded engine variant even allow for a 2000 pound max towing capacity. Expect modest acceleration and handling and overall a smooth driving experience.

Other Features

Pop open the unique vertical closing rear tailgate and you’ll see that the EcoSport packs a lot of storage capacity. Expect up to 29 cubic feet, without adjusting the back seats. Handy hooks let you hang bags or coats, and more compartments are available on the higher trims. The EcoSport comfortably seats 5 in the cabin with plenty of headroom despite the small frame. All of your drive and interior controls and information are managed through steering wheel switches and the infotainment screen, which also allows blue-tooth streaming of audio. The screen also automatically shifts to full view of the rear camera in reverse. Other safety features include blind spot monitoring, automatic emergency breaking, extra airbags and more. Sample 9

Alessa Colaianni, MD, has been completing her residency at Mass. Eye and Ear for the past 5 years. Currently the Chief Resident for Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Colaianni was determined to get the chance to benefit head and neck cancer care and honor the struggles of her patients before her residency ends in June by running with Team Eye and Ear. Though she had ran a full marathon previously in Annapolis, Maryland, as well as several half marathons, this will be her first time running the Boston Marathon®.

Q: What inspired you to join Team Eye and Ear?
A: It's such an inspiring team. I've wanted to run since I got here. We worked with Dr. Hartnick when we were PGY2 residents, and he's a huge part of Team Eye and Ear and Operation Airway. One of my co-residents, Dr. Ashley Miller, ran the marathon last year. It's a good group of people, and it's a nice way to see the city and to give back to this institution by raising money for patient care.

Q: How has the training been going? Any notable challenges or highlights?
A: Training has been going well. I've mostly been training on the weekends, but I'm getting out for long runs every Saturday or Sunday. Boston is hilly, and it's definitely challenging training in the cold winters with ice on the streets, but I ran a marathon once before, so I know I can do it again.

Q: Which areas of the hospital do you envision your funds benefiting?
A: When I graduate, I'm going to Vanderbilt for a year-long fellowship in head and neck surgical oncology, and that's something I've been really interested in doing since I matched in Otolaryngology and got exposure to the specialty. This disease robs people of many essential aspects of their humanity, interfering with peoples' ability to eat and swallow, transforming the way that somebody looks and changing the way they are able to communicate.

In particular, there are two patients who I am running in honor of this year. They are both patients who I took care of over the course of the last couple of years, and unfortunately, they both died as a result of their head and neck cancer. I formed a special connection with both of these patients and became close with their families, so I'm running in honor of them. I'm donating all of the money I raise to the care of head and neck cancer patients at Mass. Eye and Ear.

Q: What excites you the most about Marathon Monday?
A: A couple of the family members of the patients who I'm running for will be out to support me on Marathon Monday, so I'm really looking forward to seeing them waving in the stands.

In addition to working at the hospital, Dr. Colaianni is a creative writer who has published a number of essays in medical journals and literary magazines. As an added tribute, she wrote two essays about the patients she will be running in memory of this year. If you would like to read these works or show your support for Alessa on her journey, please visit her fundraising page.

If you’re looking for a tough multipurpose vehicle for off-roading adventures, or long hauls in any time of year, look no further than the 2021 Jeep Wrangler, the latest addition of the original SUV. Drivers seeking a Jeep to satisfy their towing needs in the Johns Creek, Roswell or Cumming GA regions will find all of the important details in this review of the Wrangler’s towing capacity and other features from Troncalli CDJR.

Engine Details

The important thing to note with the Wrangler is that there are many variants to choose from, which sometimes can cause confusion, so you should make note of them before choosing the Jeep for you. For engine specs, you have some options. Common among the four primary models, Sahara, Rubicon, Sport and Sport S, is the 3.6 Liter Pentastar V6 cylinder engine, which delivers up to 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The eTorque Mid-Hybrid System delivers low end torque for extra out of the gate. At slightly less horsepower, but with 295 pound-feet of torque, you can select a model with the 2L Turbo for better off-road capability. Lastly is the newly available 3L EcoDesel V6, which brings 260hp and 442pd-ft of torque to the table. Depending on what you go with, you can expect between 17 to 21 MPG city and 22 to 29 highway. Automatic Engine Start Stop functionality further assists with fuel efficiency, but the the option can be disabled if you wish.

Towing Capacity

As with engines, you can also can expect different towing capacities depending on the type of Wrangler you buy. Fortunately, it is a little easier to keep track of. A 2-door Wrangler can tow up to 2,000 pounds, while a 4-door can haul up to 3,500. In either case you have a heavy duty hooks on the front and rear, a seven and four wired harness, programable aux switches, maintenance-free batteries and more. The 4x4 systems, such as the Selec Trek, Rock Trek and Command Trek automatically assist you with delivering torque and shifting from 2 to 4-wheel drive based on the terrain, so you always maintain optimal traction. And of course, you always have eyes on your cargo with the rear camera.

Safety Features

Radar technology enables your Wrangler to always have your blindside through the Blind Spot Monitoring. You’re never caught off guard with features like Selec-Speed, which regulate your speed applies torque during inclines and slippery slopes, or Stop and Go Automatic Cruise Control for inconsistent traffic. The Active Breaking warns you in the event of potential forward collisions and will intervene to break if necessary. If all else fails, fear not. Ford Escape Dimensions, Tunkhannock Ford

The Ford Escape has gone through a bit of a revolution, and now in 2021 it represents Ford’s vision for a high tech, comfortable and classy midsized crossover. Drivers in the Dallas, Harveys Lake and Wilkes-Barre will get all of the details they need on this vehicle’s dimensions from this review by Tunkhannock Ford.

Performance

When selecting a new Ford Escape you have four models to choose from, the front wheel drive standard S, SE and SEL, and the all-wheel drive Titanium. Within those models you have up to three engine configurations available. Standard is the 1.5 Liter EcoBoost Turbocharged Inline 3 cylinder engine, which delivers 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque, for an estimated fuel economy of 28 to 34 MPG city to highway. On the Titanium you get a 2L Turbocharged 4 cylinder engine delivering 250hp and 280lb-ft of torque for 23 to 31 MPG city to highway. The SE, SEL and Titanium models also come in a hybrid or plug-in hybrid option. Both have a 2.5L IVCT Atkinson I-4-cylinder engine with 2 electric motors, combining for 165hp and 155lb-ft of torque. The plug-in hybrid’s 14kWh battery allows for up to 37 miles of all electric driving. All models are also paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Escape Exterior Dimensions

Though you can expect different available features depending on the trim level, all trims have the same dimensions and a front or intelligent all-wheel drive system. The exterior length is 180.5 to 181.3 inches four wheel to all-wheel drive. The vehicle stands at 66.1in with no added exterior features and is 85.6in wide. With the mirrors folded the escape is 78.7in wide. All models have a wheelbase of 106.7in, a track front of 62.4in and track rear of 61.8in. Notable on the outside, the Escape sports dual exhaust tips, configurable daytime running lamps, skid plates, a manual liftgate and fixed-intermittent/continuous wiper/washers for the front and rear.

Interior Dimensions

The vertically gifted drivers should have no issues when they step inside the escape. Expect 40 inches of headroom, 42.4in of legroom, 55.2in of hip room and 57.6in of shoulder room. The escape comfortably seats five, and your passengers in the back will have 39.3in of headroom, 40.7in of legroom, 53.3in of hip room and 56in of shoulder room. The hybrid and plug-in hybrid model have a little less legroom in the back at 38.9in. All seats can be adjusted to taste with three position memory controls for the driver side. Seat height nicely compensates for the car’s slightly lower ground clearance. Your infotainment touchscreen syncs with your smartphone and controls your navigation and entertainment options. Below that you have access to single zone climate controls or dual zone on higher trims. In the rear you’ll have an average of 33.6 cubic feet of cargo space, which can be increased to about 37.6 with the back seats moved up to the end of their rail tracks and maxed out at 65.3 with the seats folded down. Combine that with plenty of beverage holders and charging ports for electronics, and road trips with the family of any distance stay comfortable the whole way.
